Week 9: Forum

Turning Pro:
I will never be a photojournalist as it is not something I want to do, and I am not cut out for this career. I like taking pictures of people who want their pictures taken, if I take anything from this course, it may be the different ideas for taking pictures in different angles.  I don't have desire, drive or the cut-throat personality to get in and take shots of random strangers, and I truly don't ever want to put this much effort into taking photos again. Weeks on end of emails and plans that fall through, people that don't show up and getting judged harshly for photos that most subjects and people find beautiful. I not once was judged as having a "great" photo, and that just makes me decide that my picture taking ability, at least for photojournalism, or this course, isn't good enough, despite all the extra time and effort I put into the photos. I cannot be in a profession where the time I put in amounts to "okay", and I will go back to taking photos my way, from my perspective, of people that are happy I'm there and actually enjoy the images I take.

Favorite Photographer:
YOUSUF KARSH, presented by Marwah Alzabldl (http://marwahalzabidi.blogspot.com/), was my favorite photographer. He took pictures of people with the most dramatic and gorgeous lighting. I liked his photos the best, because he took photos the way I like to take photos, with willing participants, in a way that is posed and shows the essence and emotion being felt. The photo  below is my favorite by him, as it shows the man as well as the smoke of the cigarette and the lighting on his face is gorgeous. I will take the idea of doing/using different lighting for portraits.

week 8 extras

Truck 21 hoisting up the American flag.

A&W bear high-fiving with a kid before the race. He was quite the attraction for the youngsters.

week 8: Action Shots: Hero Half

Runners young and old came out to support our local troops on May 23 by participating in a half marathon or a shorter trek around the grounds at Community Chapel in Sweet Home.

Runner Nikki Smith (runner 33), a service member himself (359th Inland Cargo Transfer Company) and an avid runner starts the hero’s half strong, supporting his fallen brethren.
"And they're off!" Hundreds started the race at 10 a.m., running under the hoisted American flag, to show support for the veterans around the globe, each racer donated money to take part to help support the Veteran foundation in Sweet Home.

Week 8 Forum: Media

Topic 1: Technology and Innovation:
What is the single most important technological change/advancement to photojournalism and why?
-The change of a camera to a smaller, portable size that could capture an image instantaneously without people having to pose or "stand still" for long periods of time. Also the ability to have the camera mobile and "hidden" to take candid pictures allowed for a more perfect, honest image.

Who is the best photographer in history of photojournalism? Why and examples of their life:
Weegee is probably the best photojournalism, because he created the profession of photojournalism. He took pictures and showed people real-life, show stopping scenes that no one else had.

Topic 2: Photo Story Plan:
Who: Kids at Oak Heights
What: The first inter school track meet for elementary students.
When: Next Tuesday and Friday, May 29th (actual event) at 9:30 a.m.
Where: Sweet Home
Why: Ways to get kids together in an active fun way.
Kinds of Photos I want to take:
Overall: Up high (maybe in crows nest) of kids doing events from an "aerial view".
Medium: individual racers/athletes, finishing races, going "mid-jumps", start lines.
Close up: shoes on start lines, close up of shirts, close faces.

week 7: "free shoot"

I may have misunderstood about what a "free shoot" was about because I was told maybe i SHOULDN'T have chosen pictures of my cousins as my topic, so I may re-shoot this. Until then, here are the 3 shots I liked the best of the photos I did take.
Young Dale Jr. Rouse on the slide on May 9, 2015 outside the beautiful home of Eric & Jen Rouse(His aunt and Uncle) in Albany.

Brothers Jack and Dale Jr. playing together on the slide during the early mothers' day celebration barbeque on May 9th in Albany. Along with the slide, throwing balls for the dog, Ada was also a fun activity to be enjoyed by the brothers'. When it got late, marshmallows were roasted and S'mores were enjoyed by many.

"How many cousin's can fit on a slide?" From front to back: Lucy Rouse, Claire Rouse, Aubrey Rouse (Claire and Aubrey are sisters), Evie Rouse (Lucy and Evie are sisters) and Alisa Rouse (older cousin). May 9th the cousins enjoy playing while the adults caught up, drank the fresh brewed beers from the new Siuslaw Brewery started by another part of the family, and enojyed good food at the barbeque.

Other pictures of my neighborhood from my archives

February 7, 2013 snow fell and blanketed the town. This is a picture of the Calapooia river.

August 11th, 2014 a picture of a sunset on Foster lake.

After an eventful day of towing people from Germany and Columbia who were learning to water ski, wake board and wakesurf, the calm of the lake was soothing as well as beautiful.

Week 6: My Neighborhood, through my eyes

May 8th, Holley Auction waiting for food at the barbeque tents set up outside.
My neighborhood is known for a few things, muddin' in lifted trucks, country music festival in the Summer and fishing on the lake and rivers. I thought for my environmental shot I'd try to take pictures of the thing I love the most about my hometown, the lake.
Don Ross is a local artist in Sweet Home that teaches oil painting classes all around the country including Las Vegas as well as students throughout the school district. He is showing his paintings in the high school on May 8th to help out with the Holley School Auction.  To see more of his art go to his online portfolio: www.donrossartstudio.com

Fishermen in boats on Foster Lake, Early afternoon Friday, May 8th enjoying the warmth after all the rain and storms all week long.
Patrons at the annual Holley Auction (silent auction pictured here) on May 8, started at 5:00 p.m. Held in Sweet Home High School, proceeds go to the school to help fund field trips, computer labs and school supplies in the past. The items for auctions are donated by many different vendors around Oregon, ranging from a getaway on the coast, chiropractic care, a roping saddle all the way to fresh spring flowers.

Week 6: Forum Scobel Wiggins (need to edit)

http://photos.scobelwigginsphotography.com/v/dance/09_cab/balletVcharacter/B5_cab+dress+sw282.jpg.html
Took the photo with anticipation to the action, as well as correcting for the lighting that is happening on stage.
3 questions:
1.)What is the biggest challenges you have to overcome to get "the shot"?
2.)What is your favorite photo you've taken?
3.)How do you anticipate the action?

Topic 2:
My neighborhood:
1.)Biggest challenge editing/shooting this assignment: There is not much that goes on and figuring things out to actually TAKE pictures of.
2.)My favorite is the photo of the fisherman on the lake. I went to the lake all times it was sunny and went to many different view points on the lake.
3.)If I could do it again, I would go into other neighborhoods and do more research as my initial ideas didn't turn out.

Week 5: Forum

Favorite Photo Story:
What makes it interesting/catches your attention: Photo story about kids with guns, some of the images were compelling and made me think immediately about my opinion about it.
Two challenges:1.) Had to take pictures in a hospital of blood on the floor
2.) Had to get people's permission to take pictures of them, including a police officer.
Describe: Theme/Visual Consistency/Narrative there?
Theme: Gun country, and their pride of guns
Visual Consistency: Pictures all have a pride showing over all the faces and nonchalant care of the weapons with no care of safety.
What techniques/approaches can you take from this photo story? Took non-opinionated photos, with some posed but mostly non-posed, with shots of everyday life
